Corrected logo evaluation of VIP logo

What genre did you think the name represented, and why?
The genre I gave to this logo is pop. These tend to be the type of songs that are in the top 10 and can appeal to quite a varied audience. Even though the traditional word VIP is associated with a posh and formal person, currently most VIP's are very modern and young.  This is the reason whyI chose pop music as this logo's genre instead of perhaps classical or jazz. In the modern day we see VIP's going out and partying or having a fun time and therefore, the radio station named 'VIP' should also have a fun and party type sound to it.

Who did you think the audience is, and why?
I thought the the target audience for this radio station would be the ages varying from 8-40 year olds, and for both males and females. Pop music covers a wide audience and can come across songs that perhaps children like to have at their party, but also adults like to have at theirs. This could be due to the fun aspect of it and the way pop songs are normally lively and catchy.

How did you aim to appeal to that audience?
I wanted people to look at the logo and think that it's quite cool and lively at the same time, which again is in relation to the pop music. I wanted to have a sort of adult feel to it but at the same time make it suitable for children by not looking too plain and boring. I used a few different colours and inserted a few extra features that I thought could appeal to my wide target audience. I also tried to relate the logo to pop music and the fact that this music is mostly found at party's therefore should have a sophisticated look to it but on the other hand, have a fun and playful image also.

Who did you think would be the stations' competitors and why?
The stations I thought would be the most competitive with VIP in terms of the type of music that is played are; Capital and Choice during the day. The reason being is that they also play quite a lot of pop music and almost have the same target audience, in being young teenagers to middle aged adults. I think Capital is more based towards women, and Choice is a mixture therefore, VIP would need to stick to the mixture and make it clear if they want to compete with these stations.

What 'look' did you want to create and why?
I wanted to try and create a mixed look with my logo that appealed to all the ages and genders I think my radio station would be targeting. I wanted to show the pop aspect to it with a professional, but at the same time, fun and friendly look which would appeal to the target audience. I think the colours used and the way it is set out can catch the eye of the younger audience, whilst the slick and 'important' look to the logo can appeal to the older audience. The type of must that VIP plays would be perfect for these age variated party's that play the fun and lively music.

How did you create that look + use technical terminology?
I wanted to try and make the logo appeal to all the age groups, but at the same time make it unique and clever. I thought of using the red carpet straight away and I wanted to include the ropes that are at the entrance of the carpet. I also thought of using the letters (VIP) as people which brought me to my first idea.

I wanted to make the font quite large so I could use them as people, so I chose a thicker font than the rest. I then used the edit text icon to change the font to black. I then wanted to create the red carpet so I chose the rectangle tool and drew out the size I wanted it to be. I then used the paint bucket tool to turn the rectangle red. I rotated the rectangle so it was vertical using the CMD+T option, then placed the letter in the order I wanted. I then drew out the poles using the paint brush tool and adjusted the thickness of it so it was small enough. For the balls on top of the poles I used the circular shape tool to draw them out and then paint bucketed them yellow, to try and make a gold look to it. I then decided to only use the letter 'I' as a person and so placed it at the beginning of the red carpet where he was going to be the person who opens the ropes to let the VIP's on. I drew arms and hands out for him using the brush tool, and decided to try and give it a suit and bow tie. I used the lasso tool to draw out a suit blazer shape within the letter. I then filled that shape white using the paint bucket tool so it looked like a white shirt and blazer. I imported a picture of a bow tie from the internet and made it very small using the CMD+T action. As I needed to make it particularly small, I zoomed in using the zoom tool so I could adjust and move the bow tie to the right position.

However, once I had finished the logo I didn't think it quite matched up to the other logo's especially in size. Where my other two logo's were horizontally shaped, this one was vertical so stood out quite a lot. I also thought that the poles and hands I drew on the 'I' were messy and didn't look very professional. I then deleted the hands, arms, ropes and balls on top of the ropes just by clicking on each layer and pressing the 'backspace' bar. I then decided to rotate the red carpet horizontally again by using the CMD+T button and put each of the letters inside the red carpet. I kept the features inside the 'I' as I thought it looked original. I thought once I had cleaned it up a bit and made it more of the 'family' then it would be more affective. I also added a few bright yellow stars which are symmetrically added around the logo because I thought it would add more detail and a difference in colour.

To make sure all three logo's are a family I have the word 'radio' written in the same font, colour and size underneath each logo. I thought the font looked professional, slick and is easily recognisable.

What  did you think was the most successful part of you logo?
The thing I found most successful about my logo would probably have to b the features on the letter 'I' as it relates to the VIP aspect and gives the logo a bit of originality. I also liked the red carpet idea because it can appeal to all the target audiences.

Did your audience think it suited the genre?
When my audience had seen and given feedback to me for this logo they thought the concept of it was good and also liked the originality of the logo. They thought the way it linked with the radio stations name was clever, and thought the features on it related to it well. However, they said the genre of music played on the station wasn't that clear and could be improved to show this more clearly.

What skills have you developed most when creating this logo?
I have developed some skills over the time I have been creating this logo. I now have a good understanding of how to use the features on Photoshop and how to improve my logo by editing it. I have also learned how to look at a piece of work and know which parts that I have to improve, and change in order to meet the criteria and be successful.

How does your work compare to other similar logos?
Again, I don't think this logo can compare much with other logos as it is pretty unique. However, there are certain aspects of this logo such as the colours used at the shapes that are involved that share a similarity with other logos. Heart and Kerrang! radio share the same colours of red in their logo whilst Kerrang! also have the same shapes that are included in my VIP design.

What could you still do to make your work even better? Why?
There is one major factor of my design that I think I could improve on, and that is to make the genre of music that the station plays more clear to the viewer. I could also possibly add more colours or stick to a   specific colour scheme to make it visually more appealing. I could add pictures or designs that resemble the genre of music into the logo to make it more obvious to the target audience what music they will be listing to if tuned into the station.
