Corrected logo evaluation of BUZZ logo

What genre did you think the name represented, and why?
The genre I gave to this logo was the club/hot hits music. This is the type of music that you would hear in clubs and with your friends getting ready to go out for the night. I thought of this genre when I heard 'Buzz' because this type of music gives you a buzz and makes you very lively. The two z's at the end of Buzz gives the station a different and youthful sort of vibe, which suits the music associated with the station well. The target audience for this radio station is for over u18's as these are the type of people who will be listening to the music at these clubs and nights out.

Who did you think the audience is and why?
The target audience for this radio station is from ages 18-33, especially males, as these are the people more likely to be clubbing and going out. These youthful adults would want to listen to music that gets them buzzing and gets them in the mood for going out and enjoying their night with the music.

How did you aim to appeal to that audience?
I wanted the audience to see the logo and think it's quite quirky and vibrant, which relates to people's nights out and clubs. I wanted to be different and use different colours to what the original theme of the logo is (bumble bee). I used original colours at the beginning of the logo and a bright, quirky  colour at the end of the logo. This represents a night out because at the beginning of the night it is quite lively however once you get to the end its much more loud and a lot different.

Who did you think would be the stations' competitors and why?
I think that the competitors for Buzz would stations such as, Kisstory (Kiss) and capital on a Friday or Saturday night. The reason for this is because they play the same type of music on these days, whilst also having the same target audience. Although, those two stations would have also included females in theirs. However, I reckon Buzz would stand out more and appeal to the target audience as its main focus is males.

What 'look' did you want to create and why?
I wanted to try and create a clever, different and trendy look for my logo which shows my target audience that the station plays club anthems and lively tunes. Doing this would appeal to the 18-33 year olds that like going out to clubs and having fun nights out. I wanted the logo to have a quirky and unique look to it because this is what would interest my target audience and engage them with the station. Also, I wanted to make the logo look quite normal at the start with a bit of quirkiness that's why I made the bee's eye look swirly; this shows the beginning of the night. As the night goes on, things tend to get more wild so I made the end of the logo completely different to the rest of the colour scheme and inserted a vibrant colour which shows the wildness and change. The type of music that Buzz plays would be perfect for a club and also when the guys are getting ready to go out and get them hyped up and in the mood.

How did you create that look + use technical terminology?
I wanted to try and make the logo unique and appealing. I started to think of things that relate to the world buzz then feed off of that once I got an idea (bumble bee). I wanted to have something that I hadn't seen before, whilst also having something that relates and appeals to the target audience.

I didn't want to have a complicated or fancy font because I didn't think my design would work otherwise. However, I wanted quite a bold and masculine font that stands out and gives the logo a similarity to the target audience. For the first two letters I used the colour palette to make them the traditional colours of a bumble bee (black and yellow), then for the last two Z's I used a bright red. The bright red shows the end of the night I talked about earlier. I also thought to have a big and bold font as the first letter, b, was going to be the wings on the bee design.

I then used the circular shape tool to draw out the bee design, and make it yellow with the paint bucket tool. Next, I used the rectangle tool to draw the black lines on the bee's body and paint bucket them black. However, I came across a problem when the edge of the black rectangle went over the bee's body and out of the logo. I had to use the paint brush tool to paint, in white, over the edge that was showing so it blended into the background and didn't look unprofessional. I had to re-do the amount of stripes there were on the bee's body because they weren't all the same size and it didn't look very professional. To fix this I reduced the amount of stripes by deleting the layers, and made them all the same size by duplicating the first rectangle three times. To draw the legs, stinger and antennas on the bee I used a black paint brush tool. At first, I thought it looked quite messy so I zoomed into the logo and re-did it so I could make the lines neater. To draw the red swirls in the bee's eye I, again, used the paint brush tool and reduced the size of the brush so I could fit it within the space given.

To make sure all three logo's are a family I have the word 'radio' written in the same font, colour and size underneath each logo. I thought the font looked professional, slick and is easily recognisable.

What  did you think was the most successful part of you logo?
I thought that the bumble bee design and how the letter B linked in well, acting as the wings, was a successful part to my logo.

Did your audience think it suited the genre?
Once my audience had seen my logo and had given feedback i noticed that they all thought it had a professional look to it and was very original. They said everything looked fine in terms of it appealing to the target audience, whilst it also links in well with the genre of music. However, they said the genre of music that is played on this station could be a bit more obvious and showed in a way that can be instantly noticed by the viewer.

What skills have you developed most when creating this logo?
I have developed some skills over the time I have been creating this logo. I now have a good understanding of how to use the features on Photoshop and how to improve my logo by editing it. I have also learned how to look at a piece of work and know on which parts that I have to improve and change in order to meet the criteria and be successful.

How does your work compare to other similar logos?
I don't think my logo design can compare to other logos as it is original and haven't seen logo like it yet. However, a specific feature with this logo could spark a similarity with other radio logos. I think the bold black font can compare to the BBC and Absolute radio designs. Both of these stations' designs have a bold black font for the name of their radio station. I think the design of the bee is something that makes this logo seem different from the rest because from all the designs I have seen from other stations, most of them use shapes and not actual pictures of things.

What could you still do to make your work even better? Why?
I think I could improve my logo even further by adding more detail or other colours to it. I could also add something else that would relate to the genre of music the station is associated with. Doing these things could catch the eye of people a bit more and improve the originality of the logo whist giving the viewer more to look at.
