Football ident for BBC One - analysing design features

Density of information: There isn't that munch information given to us apart from a narrator saying in the last few seconds, the channel (BBC One) and what is coming up next. He also doesn't even mention the actual name of the program ( The Football League Show), but just says "With all the league cup action". The narrator is also a man which relates back to the fact that nearly all viewers would be male and would be aware of exactly what they're watching, hence the lack of information. Composition:The composition was good as the football players, in a circle, passing the ball into the middle where the BBC One logo was, looked good and suited the theme. The BBC One logo came in after the first few seconds of some players working with the ball. The immediate shots of these people with shorts, long socks and a top on with a ball indicates quickly to the audience what the program will be about. Then after when the players start to kick the balls towards the BBC One logo, almost forces the viewer keep looking at it. This keeps the name BBC One in the viewers head and shows the channel, at this moment in time, is about football. The ident could also suggest that the program coming up is mainly for men as all of the actors in the ident we see are men.

Space and Time:The ident is set in the 'real' world with real people acting in it. They're located on what looks like the half way line on a football pitch Again, indicating to the viewers that this program will be about football. We also see at the beginning, there are flats surrounding them. This shows that the program will be in the 'real' world and that the program is serious and not based on humour or cartoons.

Tempo:The tempo changes slightly from at the beginning when the men are doing various things with the ball to when the circle of the players appear. The beginning images are slow as is the music, then once the music changes the images quickly speed up and we see the men in the circle kicking the ball at a fairly fast pace. From he time when the players kick the ball to the time it reaches the middle of the circle, matches the beat to the music. BBC did this to make it look slick and tidy for the viewer and make it simple to understand whats going on.

Interaction with viewers:The interaction with viewers is quite brief but simple and gives the impression that they don't need to give that much information away as it is just football. However, he did say what type of football which was good as the viewers might want to know who and what type of teams they will be watching. The way the narrator speaks is formal as no slang is involved. From all the evidence, we could say this program would be for all ages because of the genre of the program(sport), the small bit of info and the entertaining but useful ident.

Information Vs Entertainment:In this ident, I feel that BBC One have used the ident for entertainment purposes over informative purposes. Even though the narrator says what is coming up next on the channel, he doesn't give the actual name of the program which might not appeal or mean anything to some people. The entertainment carries on throughout the whole ident which is the full 15 seconds. Whereas, the information lasts for around 3 seconds withe ident of the footballers still paying in the background. However, with the football still in the background while the narrator is speaking, it shows us that it would be fairly obvious what is on the channel next. The fact the balls are moving throughout the whole ident gives off the feeling that BBC One are an ongoing channel that like to move quickly and smoothly, which they do as they don't air adverts on their channel.
